The Pittsburgh Post Gazettes’ Doug Oster combined a special Valentine’s edition of “Digging with Doug” with a very special visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor Garden Club.
Nadine Jedlicka, volunteer gardener, coordinates the gardening activities for the Residents at the Little Sisters Home on Benton Avenue. On the day of Doug’s visit they were working with geranium and ficus cuttings, but they also work with fresh cut flowers to make seasonal arrangements. The Residents enjoy the fruits of the creativity by displaying their plantings and bouquets in their rooms.
Many Residents participate in the Garden Club because it brings back good memories, but Mary Prascak admits she enjoys it because, “It’s fun playing in dirt!”
So, just as Doug Oster suggests dropping a penny in your vase of Valentine’s Day roses to keep their blossoms, so do the Little Sisters of the Poor count on every penny that is dropped in their collecting baskets to ensure their Residents continue flourish.
