Bridging Generations
Time and again, the Little Sisters of the Poor and their Residents are blessed through interactions with youth. This summer a Little Sister from our Home in Pittsburgh, Sister Georgia, has travelled to Lisbon to escort six young ladies from the United States to World Youth Day! We have been keeping up with the happenings on this pilgrimage and of course keeping all the pilgrims worldwide in our prayers.
Here at our Home in Pittsburgh we have had many opportunities to interact with youth this summer. In June the Sisters attended a Vacation Bible School day at a local parish. The little tikes were so thrilled to meet Sisters in person and show them the display of “Sister History.” In July a wonderful group of hard-working teenagers from North Carolina came to our Home for a mission trip of service. The teens cleaned the apartments, worked in the yard, painted the hallways and had meaningful conversations with the elderly Residents!
Returning after a three-year hiatus due to Covid was the “Tunes with Tots” program. The McDermott family has been visiting with their six children for over ten years now. They were thrilled to make a visit with the Residents this summer and catch up!
As Pope Francis encouraged us in his letter concerning World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in July “celebrate this day and make it the occasion of a joyful and renewed encounter between young and old.” We are so thrilled to have experienced many opportunities to bridge the generations with young and old this summer!
